April 2007 • Milwaukee Public Museum and Planetarium

February 2006 • Costa Rica Astronomy and Birding Adventure

Our days were spent birdwatching and visiting a wide variety of tropical ecosystems. At night, we set up the telescopes to explore very different skies than we can see from Madison. Highlights included visiting an active volcano at Poas Volcano National Park, hiking under the rushing water of La Paz waterfall, swimming in the calm Pacific waters at Punta Leona Beach Resort, following a troup of Capuchin monkeys at Carara National Park, and identifying many hummingbird species at 10,000 feet in the central highlands.

August 2003 • Mars among the Maya. Yucatan, Mexico trip for the Opposition of Mars

To take advantage of the best viewing of Mars at Opposition, we centered our trip near Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula. We stayed at a luxuriously restored sisal plantation, Hacienda Temozon (http://www.haciendasmexico.com/temozon/overview.php). We toured the state of Yucatan's capital, Merida, explored the fascinating Mayan ruins of Uxmal, Chitzen Itza, and Dzibilchaltun, and visited the area of the Chicxulub Crater. It is believed that the impact of the meteor that created the crater 65 million years ago, caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Our trip ended with a visit to the crystal blue waters of Mexico's stunning Carribean coast.
